Retriever Training
We offer a variety of training programs to fit your family’s specific needs for your dog from puppy head start to advanced retriever training methods. Read below to find out more.
Starting as early as 8 weeks old, this program is designed to set the foundation for your puppy’s learning and training. We believe to get a future champion, gun dog, or retriever you must begin with socialization training. This program will introduce puppies to other puppies, children, the field environment, trips to places outside of a home, and other experiences. We will work on name recognition, basic obedience commands, swimming, and loose leash work. Additionally, while at home with a qualified trainer your puppy will receive immense amounts of love and nurturing too.
*This is not exclusive to retrievers. Our Puppy Head Start Program is open to all dog breeds and sizes.*
Puppy Head Start Program
Basic Obedience Program
This six week long board and stay program provides older puppies, 5 months and up, or dogs with the foundation for everything they need to succeed as a family pet, hunting companion, or to go on to advanced competitions.
*This is not exclusive to retrievers. Our Basic Obedience Program is open to all dog breeds and sizes.*

The first commands taught are sit, heal, come here, kennel, and place. Every dog at the kennel learns these same commands as well.

This foundation of obedience is something your dog will have for the rest of their life, and is essential for continuing with any other training programs at Top Line.
Gun Dog Program
This program is six months in length, and requires a minimum age of 5 months for each pup. We will start with basic obedience. Once that is mastered we will then introduce your dog to birds, gunfire, swimming, and lots of fun bumpers!

They will learn how to properly hold, give, fetch, and deliver to hand which will in turn make every hunting experience more enjoyable for you and your dog. We will teach your dog how to retrieve on command and how to be steady at your side by experiencing land and water drills.

Eventually, dogs will be very accustomed to going in and out of blinds, and will be introduced to a variety of hunting scenarios. We are able to tailor this program to the needs of each dog and hunter. Additionally, we are able to offer client training prior to and upon pick up of your dog once they have completed the gun program. We believe proper handling techniques will reinforce the training your dog received in this program.
advanced retriever training
Field Trials and Hunt Tests
From a seasoned or senior hunting style dog, this advanced program will train and produce proven results with this program. For those interested in entering the hunt test and field trial area, or even if you already have a participant, Top Line develops the highest skills so that your dog will reach their full potential.

This program follows the same training outline as the Gentleman’s Gun Dog Program and then builds off that to include blind retrieves. These basics for retrieves will include, but are not limited to: single T’s, 7-Point and swim-by, all in preparation of running big water and land blinds. Upon completion your hunting and competition partner will be able to handle multiple marked retrieves on land and water as well as blind retrieves in the same environment.
